Power Animals - Power Totems

Some people seem to consider the Power Totem to be the same as the Life Totem, if you prefer to call it that, then OK!
Lakota Culture (www.elexion.com/lakota/) states that each one of us has a particular animal as our Personal Medicine. Totems or personal Power Animals are protector spirits that help us in our daily life and in our spiritual search for Harmony. These Power Animals are usually a reflection of our innermost self, representing also the qualities one needs in this world, but that are often hidden or darkened.
We are surrounded by animal influences, and yet we seem somehow blind to their precense. There are many clues that indicate our Power animal is calling to us and I can personally vouch that there is a great releif when one recognises that animal and answers that call. Clan Totems
It has been a tradition amongst Native people that members of the tribe be divided into separate groups, called Clans in order that the members should be responsible for particular actions and to hone skills that were in accord with their inner nature. Some Native American Tribes used a system of only four Clans - Bear, Wolf, Badger and Cougar, whilst some others used an eight clan system, which might include the above plus Deer, Snipe, Beaver and Eagle. The Cherokee use a Seven Clan system.
Interestingly, the Navajo seemed to have a system where could have as many clans as they liked, I have counted eighty individual Navajo Clans.
For most Tribes it has been the tradition that were clans were based on a matrilineal system (traced thru the mother's line) so that if the Mother was Bear Clan, the children would be also. For times when a matrilineal line could not be found, clan seekers would be told to go on a spirit quest involving going to the mountains or to a forest, and observing everything that happened. If a member of the tribe said that he was walking though a wooded area, and suddenly he saw, in a clearing, that a deer was standing there looking at him, then he was Deer Clan.

Messenger Totems
As we all pass through this life problems and questions are constantly arising, and having somewhere to go for good advice is without doubt a valuable thing. Whilst we have our Power Animal to remind us who we really are, there are Messenger Spirit Guides, in animal form, that are happy to offer us guidance on how to deal with our problems of the present moment, if we are able to find those guides and listen to them.
