Native American people have always believed that they had Spirit Animals that they were born with. They believed that upon birth an animal's spirit enters into that person, its duties are to keep each person strong and wise as well as to excel in matters of attributes given to that Animal. That Spirit is known as a Power Animal or Power Totem.

I have a friend who is an artist who runs a gallery from an old warehouse next to a railroad. He has been having a running battle with the city, who say that the building is unsafe and a fire risk, and they keep trying to get him to move out. Along with his friends, he as personally renovated the building, installed a ramp for disabled access, and installed many safety features. Still the city try to make him move, and he keeps on fighting them by making contacts, building his reputation, and renovating the building. I checked for his Power Animal - and found "The Salmon", which could not be a greater symbol of determination in the face of overwhelming odds.
